Installing WordPress from scratch

This is the first in a series of basic tutorials to help in installing open-source applications on Pipe Tens hosting services from source.

For the purposes of this tutorial we assume that you:

  • Have a Pipe Ten Linux shared, reseller or dedicated hosting account.
  • A domain added to the control panel under which you want to host your own WordPress blog.

You will also need a:

  • Web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera or other).
  • Text editor (Notepad, Textpad, GEdit or other).
  • FTP client (FileZilla, Dreamweaver or other).

Steps 1-3:

1. Download the latest WordPress zip.

2. Extract the zip file to your local machine.

3. Upload the WordPress files via FTP and your FTP Client.

Steps 4, 5, 6:

4. Create a copy of the wp-config-sample.php as wp-config.php on your local machine.

5. Create a MySQL database for WordPress in the hosting control panel.

6. Visit your WordPress install in a web-browser and complete basic info.

Next Steps:

  • Change your admin password to something secure but memorable.
  • Start posting and/or changing the design of your new blog.
