Keeping your domain’s contact information updated

Keeping your domain’s contact information updated
We have previously posted about how important it is to keep your hosting account contact details up to date.  It is also equally important that your domain name contact details are also kept up to date.  By contact details we mean full name, postal address, email address and telephone number.

No matter who your domain is registered with the domain is managed by a governing body.  The three main governing bodies you may come across when registering a domain with Pipe Ten are ICANN (when registering for example a .com, net or .info domain), Nominet (when registering a .uk domain) and EURID (when registering a .eu domain).  At any time these governing bodies may need to contact you and they will use your registered contact details.

When registering a domain apart from agreeing to your domain registrars terms and conditions you are also agreeing to the governing bodies terms and conditions.  The term and condition are link below for each governing body:

ICANN Terms and Conditions – Especially section 3 – .com, .net or .info extensions

Nominet Terms and Conditions – Especially section 4 – .uk extensions

EURID Terms and Conditions – Especially section 5 – .eu extension

The governing bodies have been known to suspend and cancel domains that have not kept their contact details updated.  So the risk of losing your domain alone is worth following the rules and keeping your domain contact details updated.

Correct whois details are also required when ordering a SSL certificate as the SSL certificate must match the address details shown on the whois for the domain.

How to update your details
If  your domain is registered with Pipe Ten then you can update these yourself depending on how the domain is registered with us.

For domains registered through your hosting control panel, you can update your contact and billing information for the domain using the following instructions provided.

For domains within Pipe Ten’s domains system, login to your account and view the list of your domains.  Select which domain your would like to update the contact details on by clicking the ‘M’ icon, then contact information.  Here you can update your ‘Registrant Contact Info’, ‘Admin Contact Info’, ‘Billing Info and ‘Technical Contact Info’.  To confirm any changes click the ‘Submit’ button at the bottom.

How to check your current details
You can check your current contact details any time using our whois lookup service.

If you are worried about your contact details being shown on the whois lookups you can use ID protect which you can purchase through your domains account.
