Install: Drupal

WordPress Hosting TutorialsPipe Ten are one of the leading providers for Drupal Hosting in the UK. Drupal is a popular PHP open-source cms with over 13,000 active developers, 710,148 users in 228 countries speaking 181 languages! It is used for high profile websites such as the official site of the Whitehouse and the economist.

Drupal can also be installed via Pipe Ten’s 1-CLICK Script Software. Lets find out more here

With its ever growing popularity and more of our customers using it, we have decided to do a post on the initial install of the software and trouble shooting any problems that may occur regarding .htaccess files. We recommend using the newest PHP version to avoid any installation issues.

Steps to take

  1. Rename the “default.settings.php” file located in the directory, “domain.com/sites/default/” to “settings.php”
  2. Upload all the Drupal files into your web directory using FTP.
  3. Visit your site address and choose your installation language
  4. You will now be on a Verify requirements page, that will check the servers compatibility with the Drupal software.
If you see the below error then keep reading and we will tell you how to fix it.
  5. To fix this we need to turn off the Multibyte string input function, Register Global’s and magic quotes to off in php. To do this we need to add the following lines to the .htaccess file in the root directory of Drupal.
  6. php_value magic_quotes_gpc 0
    php_value register_globals 0
    php_value session.auto_start 0
    php_value mbstring.http_input pass
    php_value mbstring.http_output pass
    php_value mbstring.encoding_translation 0

  7. Once the above is added to the .htaccess file you will be able to proceed and input your MySQL details. Remember to use either “dmysql.pipeten.co.uk” for Derby servers or “mysql.pipeten.co.uk” for Sheffield servers. Never localhost.
  8. You can now continue with the rest of your install.

Shared Drupal hosting is available from Pipe Ten with massive 256MB memory limits for extended plugin support. Larger/heavier Drupal websites may benefit most from our dedicated Drupal hosting solutions. If in doubt, speak to the experts/contact one of our team.
