Introducing .uk domains

From the 10th June 2014, Nominet are introducing the shorter domain extensions for the first time.

Do I need it?

Not necessarily. If you’d like a slightly shorter version of your established domain name then you might want it.

Is it replacing the,,, extensions?

No. All the other extensions will continue to work exactly as they have been doing happily for the past 20 years.

Can I register any .uk domain name?

No. Although that would be nice, it is a bit complicated. You can only register .uk domains for which you have registered the equivalent domain name before 08:00 on 10 June 2014 or that only the other equivalent,,, or existed before that date.

For a precise answer you can use Nominet’s Rights lookup tool for information on who has first rights.

However, if you are wanting a new .uk domain, where there are no existing domains with rights, will simply be able to register the new .uk domain.

OK, so what’s the point?

A lot of people have asked us this question but we don’t really have an answer. I suppose in the long run it could be beneficial to have the slightly shorter andsnapper version of your domain so people have three less characters to type when connecting with you.

How long do I have the “rights” to register the .uk version of my domain for?

5 years. If you have a unique,,,, or the .uk will be reserved for you for free until 10 June 2019 as long as your other domain remains registered.

So I don’t need to register it now?

But I still want to register the equivalent .uk versions of my domains now.

No problem, contact support and we’ll process them for you.
