More customers are switching their domains to Pipe Ten

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

You may have noticed that many of the large domain registrars have been raising their domain registration fees recently. While this is a concern for many website owners this is benefiting customers of Pipe Ten as they are now getting some of the best value domains available in the UK. This is also the reason more and more customers are switching registrars and transferring their domain registrations over to Pipe Ten.

Compare Pipe Ten pricing to that of many of the popular UK registrars for the main top level domains:

Domain price comparisons for .com .org .net .info .biz

Keeping your domain’s contact information updated

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Keeping your domain’s contact information updated
We have previously posted about how important it is to keep your hosting account contact details up to date.  It is also equally important that your domain name contact details are also kept up to date.  By contact details we mean full name, postal address, email address and telephone number.

No matter who your domain is registered with the domain is managed by a governing body.  The three main governing bodies you may come across when registering a domain with Pipe Ten are ICANN (when registering for example a .com, net or .info domain), Nominet (when registering a .uk domain) and EURID (when registering a .eu domain).  At any time these governing bodies may need to contact you and they will use your registered contact details.

Domain names – Registering, Transfering & Renewing

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

There are two ways to register, renew and transfer domain names with Pipe Ten, either via Pipe Ten’s Domain Management System or via Pipe Ten’s Web Hosting Control Panel.

Registering Domain Names

via Pipe Ten Domain Management System – Domain names can be registered through our domain registration system where many top level domain extensions are available. To search for available domains please visit our domain registration page. Accounts in the Domain Management System are separate to the Web Hosting Accounts.

via Pipe Ten Web Hosting Control Panel – Domain names can also be registered via your web hosting control panel, instructions on how to do this can be found in the manual here. The contact and billing information for a domain name can also be managed here and the renew method can also be set. If you need more advanced functionality such as changing the name servers on a domain name you will need to move the domain over to an account the Domain Management System. Please contact support for help with this.

When you register a domain it can take up to 24 hours for it to become live.  This is due to the registry and DNS propagation and unfortunately it is not possible to speed this process up although often they are available within just a few hours.

Each domain name is registered for a specific period of years. To ensure you keep possession of a domain it must be renewed before the end of its registration period.

Each top level domain has different rules for how long it can be registered. .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us and .cn domain names can be registered for a maximum of 10 years. .uk domain names can be registered for a 2 year period only.

Transferring Domains

via Pipe Ten Domain Management SystemTo transfer a domain in the domain name system the following form here needs to be filled in.

via Pipe Ten Web Hosting Control PanelTo transfer a domain using the hosting control panel please see the manual here.

Transferring a .uk domain name to Pipe Ten

  • For .uk domain transfers to complete successfully you must contact your current registrar and request them to change the IPS tag on the domain name to ours which is PIPETEN.
  • All .uk domain transfers both to and away from Pipe Ten are performed FREE OF CHARGE.  Please note: .uk domains don’t use authorization codes or registrar locks.

Transferring all other domain name types to Pipe Ten

  • Before you can inititate a transfer for a .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us or .cn domain name you need to obtain the EPP authentication code from the losing registrar.
  • As per the ICANN regulations when a transfer is submitted, a verification email will be sent to the administrative or registrant contact for the domain.  To proceed with the transfer the authorisation email must be responded to. You can check the administrative contact by performing a whois lookup on the domain name.
  • You cannot transfer a domain that is less than 60 days old. If you registered your domain within the last 60 days, please wait until after 60 days before initiating a transfer.
  • A domain must be in an ‘ACTIVE’ or ‘OK’ status. If a domain is in any of the follow statuses ‘REGISTRAR-LOCK’, ‘REGISTRAR-HOLD’, ‘REGISTRY-LOCK’, ‘REGISTRY-HOLD’, ‘REDEMPTION PERIOD’ or ‘PENDING DELETE’ status, the global registries will not allow registrar transfer.  You can check the status of your domain via a whois lookup. To unlock you domain please contact your current registrar.
  • Non .uk domain transfers are charged at the renewal price of the domain which includes 1 year extension to the registration of the domain, so you don’t lose any time you have paid for. There is one exception to this rule: If the domain was recently reactivated from an expired state, you will not get a year added to the expire date.

Renewing Domains

via Pipe Ten Domain Management System – For information on how to renew a domain using the domains system then please see the instructions here.

via Pipe Ten Web Hosting Control Panel – To renew or set auto-renew with the hosting control panel please check the manual on configuring domain renewal here.

If your domain expires it will become inactive and all services such as your website and email will stop working. A parking page may also be displayed and it is possible that you could lose your rights to the ownership of the domain name.

If you do let your domain expire there is a grace period after the expiry date where you will be able to renew the domain without another party taking control of it. The length of the grace period depends on the type of domain. After this period has expired the domain will be deleted from the registry and will be available for re-registration by others.

One method to prevent your domain from expiring is to use the auto-renew function.  This facility is available for registrations handled in both Pipe Ten’s domains system and the web hosting control panel. For this method to operate successfuly there must be enough credit or a valid credit card registered on the account.

When a domain name is renewed before it reaches its expiry date, the period you choose to renew it for is added to its expiry date. So you will never lose out by renewing early.

If you are renewing an expired domain then it can take up to 24 hours to be re-activated.

Transferring domain names away from Pipe Ten:

  • If you are wanting to transfer your domain away from Pipe Ten then please contact support requesting the domain be unlocked and to receive the EPP authorisation code or for .uk domains requesting the change of the IPS Tag to that of the gaining registrar.
  • Unlike many other registrars there is NO CHARGE from Pipe Ten to transfer any domain name registered with Pipe Ten away to alternative registrar.
  • For additional information regarding ICANN transfer regulations, go to: http://www.icann.org/en/transfers/.

Shield your Identity – Protect yourself from spammers and scammers

Monday, April 6th, 2009

id_protect_medWhen you register a domain name your private contact information is included in a publicly accessible database known as WhoIs. This information is available to anyone who wants to see it by performing a whois search on the domain.

If you have your domain names registered with Pipe Ten you can take advantage of our new ID Protect service by switching your “public” domain registration to a “private” unlisted registration. ID protect works in the same way as having your phone number “unlisted”. It ensures that your private contact information is protected by the “Domain Privacy Protection Service”. The domain names which support whois protection are .com, .net, .org, .info & .biz.

How do I change my name servers?

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

If your domain name is registered through Pipe Ten’s domain registration system you first need to log into your account at domains.pipeten.com. Click to view your domain names, then click the “M” icon next to the domain you would like to update, then click the link titled “Change Nameservers” and you can update the name servers on your domain. If your domain name wasn’t registered through Pipe Ten you need to contact your domain registrar and ask them to do this. Most registrars provide you with a control panel to allow you to do this yourself.

Will my name and contact information be publicly available?

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Yes. Information about who is responsible for domain names is publicly available to allow rapid resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws. The registrar will make this information available to the public on a “Whois” site.
